or generations, Sri Lanka Law College has stood as the singular gateway to the legal profession in Sri Lanka. Each year, thousands of ambitious graduates compete for a coveted seat — and the 2027 intake is now officially open. If a career at the Bar has been your ambition, the window begins on the 30th of March, 2026.

The College has issued its call for online applications for the Academic Year 2027, inviting eligible candidates to sit the Competitive Entrance Examination. The process is rigorous, transparent, and entirely merit-based — qualities befitting an institution that shapes the nation's legal minds.

The Entrance Examination — At a Glance

Every applicant must sit all four examination papers. A minimum score of 40% is required in each paper — falling below this threshold in even one paper renders the candidate ineligible for admission, regardless of overall performance.

Paper Duration Format Pass Mark
General Knowledge 1 Hour 50 MCQs 40 / 100
General Intelligence 1 Hour 50 MCQs 40 / 100
Proficiency in English 1½ Hours Structured Paper 40%
Proficiency in Sinhala / Tamil 1½ Hours Structured Paper 40%

The language papers cover a broad range of competencies: essay writing and practical documents, summarisation, terminology and vocabulary, grammar, compound words and antonyms, and comprehension passages.

Merit Selection — How Rankings Are Determined

Candidates may answer the General Knowledge and General Intelligence papers in Sinhala, Tamil, or English. However, only the marks from these two papers count toward the merit ranking used for final selection. Choose your medium of instruction carefully — it cannot be changed after submission.

Application Period

Application Window
30 March 2026 — 30 April 2026

Applications are accepted exclusively online. Ensure all documents and information are accurate before submission — no amendments will be entertained after the deadline.

Tips for a Strong Application

  • Verify all eligibility criteria against your original certificates before starting the online form.
  • If you hold equivalent qualifications, call 070-6759892 first — apply only after receiving written permission from the College.
  • Decide your medium of language (Sinhala, Tamil, or English) for the GK and GI papers before applying. This choice is final and irrevocable.
  • Begin preparing for all four papers simultaneously — a failure in any single paper, regardless of your aggregate, results in disqualification.
  • Focus revision on General Knowledge and General Intelligence — these are the sole determinants of your merit ranking for final selection.
  • Apply well before 30 April 2026 to avoid last-minute technical difficulties with the online portal.

Why Sri Lanka Law College?

Founded in 1874, Sri Lanka Law College is the only institution in the country authorised to call candidates to the Bar as Attorneys-at-Law. It is not merely a stepping stone — it is the definitive path to legal practice in Sri Lanka. Admission is intensely competitive, which means that thorough, early preparation is not optional. It is essential.

The entrance examination tests not just rote knowledge, but analytical reasoning, language command, and general awareness — qualities that define a competent legal mind. Begin early, prepare diligently, and approach the examination with the same rigour you will one day bring to the courtroom.
